Hikaru no Go - Home

Welcome to my little home for Hikaru no Go, a series that's been near and dear to my heart since I was in middle school (just like Hikaru himself). It's a masterful coming-of-age story that'll stay with you for a thousand years. Do you like games? Do you like ghosts? Do you like getting emotionally destroyed? If your answer is "Yes!" or "But I already watch Yugioh," you might like Hikaru no Go!

Some quick facts:

  • Written by Yumi Hotta, illustrated by Takeshi Obata (of Death Note and Bakuman fame; predates Death Note by 4 years)
  • Originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1999 to 2003, with a total of 189 chapters; Anime (Studio Pierrot) ran from 2001 to 2003
  • Includes manga, anime, an OVA, several video games, and most recently, a Chinese live action drama
  • Revolves around go, an East Asian board game that dates back thousands of years and is still widely enjoyed today
  • Has an entirely fictional cast and fictionalized tournaments, but includes real professional go records and social institutions

I first read Hikaru no Go when I was about 13 years old or so. At the time my family went to a church that happened to be down the street from the library where my best friend's dad worked; Every Sunday morning when my mom had choir practice, I would walk down to the library, and spend an hour reading by myself. They'd recently gotten the entirety of Hikaru no Go, and I remembered reading a chapter in an old issue of Shonen Jump and enjoying it, so I read the whole series all the way through- I was the first person to read the library's copies, so it felt so special to me :) The series absolutely drew me in, and hasn't left my mind since. Every May I reread the manga or rewatch the anime, and I can't recommend it enough to anyone who might be interested!

What's New?

Today is May 5th, and to celebrate, I've been working on a few projects here on the shrine! I'll be continuing all throughout the month, so check back frequently!

Complete/In Progress

  • New translations: Under the lyrics page, I've added lyrics and translations for the first two anime endings and the fan song AWAY. I'll be continuing to update with the remaining anime songs, as well as the character songs.

Coming Soon

  • Video games: Did you know Hikaru no Go has a total of 5 video games? While none were officially released in English, they're worth taking a look at, and all are playable today via the magic of emulation. (Heian Gensou Ibunroku is a particularly wild ride!) I'll be adding a page discussing each of these games.
  • Story analysis and chapter summaries: I also intend to make a page discussing the manga chapter by chapter, with each chapter getting its own summary and analysis. I hope this page will be useful both for those who want to get into the meat of the story, and for folks who just need some help remembering "wait, which chapter was that scene again?"
  • Fanficition: Every good fansite needs a fic recs page, right?
