What is Atem Like to Work With?
In my experience, he's very friendly. He's quite protective, and takes interest in people's overall wellbeing; when I was in college he often used to shut my wifi off if I stayed up too late on a school night, lol. He's very opinionated, and at times can be a bit demanding or mischievious, but I've never experienced him acting outright hostile or selfish. He loves fashion, and WILL provide style suggestions whether you want him to or not- the more edgy and ostentatious, the better.
Of course, he also loves games. Perhaps surprisingly (given the vague and pointless rivalry some people apply to the two franchises), he particularly loves Pokemon; his favorite is Mewtwo. He also seems to like MMORPGs and TTRPGs. Most of all, I think he likes to see people enjoy games together with their friends, so don't be surprised if he shows up to watch multiplayer sessions!
Is Atem One of the Netjeru?
Personally, I don't consider him as such, no. (I mean, I'm sure most ordinary kemeticists would shank you for even suggesting the notion, but that's neither here nor there lol). To me, he is a thoroughly modern god. I tend to work with him in a more casual manner than I would one of the Netjeru; I treat him more the way I would an ancestor, a spirit guide, or a saint, perhaps. Or to put it another way, if Bast and Sekhmet are my moms, Atem is more like my brother.
That being said, I do often invite him to participate in rituals or spellwork alongside me. Here's his figurine all dressed up in a special new cape for Wep Ronpet in 2025, alongside my other little "assistants" (Cleo de Nile, left, and Princess Nofret Mekit Dark Eradicator Warlock, right).
Can I Work With Atem Too?
Sure, why not? I'm not his boss. Admittedly I don't really have any advice for getting in touch with him, since in my case he sort of just Showed Up one day (which tbf is usually how this sort of thing goes for me anyway). Do what suits you and your practice best. That being said, anyone who's read early Yugioh knows Atem has a strong sense of justice (to put it mildly), so... I would recommend only trying to work with him if your intentions and values are in the right place; if he gets mad at you for something, that's not my problem. If you're someone who ordinarily works with justice deities in general, you're probably fine. Stay Ma'at, y'all.
